When you shift from a Christian school to a Hindu school, you end up not knowing anything about the mantras that the students recite there. It’s the same condition with me. I remember having eyes wide open during the first assembly in school. And, I faced the reality, the fact that I don’t know anything except for gayathri matra. First, I was under impression that the students here knew the meaning to whatever they are reciting. But, bit by bit, I realized that people here recite the mantras just like the parrot like chanting. They don’t know the meaning of the things they recite. I found it hollow, hypocritical and what not!
This way, I am better. Atleast, I know what I pray. Even though my prayers go “He bhagwaan…aaj meri madad karna…aaj
I have nothing against Hindu religion. I totally believe in “Sarva Deva Namaskaaram Pratigachhati”. I have a mixture of Hindu and Christian beliefs. But, what I am against is reciting mantras without knowing the meanings. It is not the case only with my school. Sandya Vandanam is a practice that Brahmin boys do after their Upanayanam or Poonal. It is basically a list of mantras that they recite in three parts of the day, and is a Hindu code of liturgical prayers. I really doubt if my cousins even know the Sandya Vandanam. Each line in the code has a meaning, and each line is said with a special tone and action. The only man whom I have seen doing it in the right way is probably my thata who used to day it out loud every morning. He told his Sandya Vandnam till the week before he passed away. I am sure one of my cousins would have been happy to discard his Poonal when my father made him say gayathri mantra a 108 times at four in the morning just the next day after his poonal ceremony!
I guess it was the same case with me also, sometimes. For example, while telling Ganesh Stuti, it was my sister who pointed out my mistake while I happily recited “Loka Vinasha Karanam” instead of “Shoka Vinasha Karanam”. The change in one word brought out SUCH a huge difference in meaning! I guess, it’s only from that day onwards that I was put-to think about the meanings of these lines. These mantras will be mere sentences if you don’t know their meaning, but will help you discover meaning of life, and existence of God when you know their meanings.
Take time to know what lies in these mantras – the meanings are not very complicated! Or, be like me, pray every day – “He Bhagwaaan meri madad karo! Aaj

nice post,
whatever mantra we recite are from ancient scriptures like vedas and upnishads, composed in sankrit( language that was popular and used as common language). This is still continued. Now no one thinks about the meaning. it has become like a routine.
Yes you are right in that one really doesn't know the meanings.I asked one of my elders that and he responded that it is not that much about praying to God, who will anyway respond if you have a clear conscience. It is more about keeping our traditions alive. And I think that he has a valid point. I also underwent my upnayan and more than the mantras, I enjoyed the fact that it was such a huge get together and the feeling that I was contributing my part .
Btw, did you see the HP6? I posted my humble views on it on my blog . If you feel like go through it.
I think I will take the easy route and do your prayer instead!
Guilty as charged!
We used to have prayer times in hostel during college days. Like a parrot, in no time, I memorized all the Sanskrit lines but didn't understand a word that I was saying. But even then it was nice! All of us singing together... that's what made it so special. Gayathri mantra is so relaxing!
Nowadays, I don't pray much. Not an atheist, but not very religious either. Though I wish I was back in hostel to sing those prayers with the 15-20 odd gals who were there :)
as far as your understanding about Mantra's is concerned, I have no problems with that...
But believe me these sanskrit mantras are very powerful and there is also a lot of research going on to appreciate it.
When you'll learn wave mechanics in std.11
then you can understand the real power of sanskrit mantras after giving a little bit of thought...
I think I've spoken too much... sorry :P
Yaar mantra s r hard to decipher!! y do u think inspite of the lure of extra marks, i chose hindi as an extra subject in 10th grade!!
Its like hieroglyphics actually!!...i actually used to say another prayer b4 the school prayers..so i m not all taht bad i guess :P...
But yeah i can see what u mean too :)
for now lets just do a nanaste and “He Bhagwaaan meri madad karo! Aaj maine ye nahi padha..aage se ye nahi hoga”! :-)
luv
amith
what you say is right. most of the time we recite the mantras without knowing the meaning.that is why I feel it is better to be simple but clear in what ever you say to God. after all he is the all mighty. he knows every thing and he is there to take care of us
same case. I know only the Gayatri Mantra and I pray in English sometimes at home too. Though I am a hindu, I know nothing about the prayers or slokas, recitations whatever!
And when the exmas came, God definitely became mine as I always used to say,"Oh my God! tomorrow is exam. "
“Loka Vinasha Karanam” instead of “Shoka Vinasha Karanam”.
rotfl!! :D :D :D
i totally agree, one should know what they are reading, just blindly by hearting stuff doesn't work
very nicely written ramya, i loved the way you have written this, shows a sense of maturity, loved it very much
take care and keep writing......
very good thought girl...and i completely agree with u on this thing...
most of us go on saying prayers as if they are a part of the system without even knowing what they mean or stand for
a simple prayer is more powerful than these rhymes and mantras which one doesnt even understand one bit...
@ Amit - so true!
@ Sumit - a valid point! But, still, you can't simply say some things, you should know the meaning...you should atleast know the purpose! You know, Sandya Vandanam is done to save the world, its not for oneself, but for the mankind...you should atleast know the things you say!
I posted a long comment on you blog...I like your review.. very nice punch-lines :-)
@ Sj - :-)
@ Dhanya - Yeah, I agree...its fun to recite everything together :-)
@ Ashish - I see a GEEK!...oh.. yes...yo an IITian right.. U HAVE to be a geek!
@ amith - Mallu...taking hindi for getting high marks...now THAT'S strange..unless you are brought up in north!
@ Arunima - you know what... I say "Oh my God" always! I repeat is almost a 100 times a day!
And, yes, I'm the same... I'm illiterate in hindu culture...I know Christian stuff VERY well!
@ Anju - so true :-)
@ Durga - Yeah..... hahahaha!
@ thousif - :-) Thanks
By birth, a mixture of Brahmanism and Orthodox Christianity, I've seen what both sides offer in terms of prayer.
Luckily, this vantage point has thought me that the best way to pray is to lay in the dark, just before sleep, look up and say "Yo God! Time we had a chat!" A nonchalant approach, yes, but it works!
What you say is correct and truly parroting does not appeal to inquisitive minds. But think of it , should we chuck out 'OM" since we don't know it's meaning and start saying "amen" just coz we know it means 'so be it' thanks to our Christian upbringing in school! Is it not our fault that we don't know the meaning of OM as it is more engrained in OUR rituals? Is it not better to try and find out it's meanings and then try to dump it if need be?
BTW, so very thanks for ur comment, a flattering long one. A long comment means that u related to it and nothing can be better. I also replied to ur comments on my blog. Thanks and don't worry, i have a lot of time to read ur long comments . engg students always have them. It is only the ones who prepare for it who fall short of time.
Cheers....
Its better to say he bagvaan aaj mere madad karna than to say mantra which u dont even understand.
Thats exactly why I used java scripty in the lab which was supposed to be done my com objects
haha and I cleared :D
Absolutely!!Mechanizing a prayer with unknown chants is just redundant.Simple prayers wch we think wud connect us to god always serve the purpose. And of course,i too studied in a christian school and i know their prayers are far more simpler and to the point, but then i guess the mistake is also on the part of the school who make student chat mantras for the sake of it.
And again cant help it when ur in china its always better to be a Chinese.
hey ramya !!!
Once again very nice post!!
"Loka Vinasha" kissa is too good.. the other such example is of ganesh aarti which is "sukh-karta, dukh-harta" n i've heard ppl confidently singing it as "dukh-karta, sukh-harta" n i guess the god is kind enough to bless ppl who are saying regarding him.. :)
i share the same feeling with about understanding the meanings of mantras.. u should definitely know them as it helps you to understand the importance of them.. abt sandhya vandanam, its just a "thanks giving" ceremony for everything around us.. ;) :)
hey can u tell me whats "thata" means ,plzz .. :)
Yeah, true that people dunno what they are reciting..but verses apart, you know what u r praying for,.and so does Him..so why worry..
You just penned my feeling, that I used to hv back then. This is completely true and is hypocritical...
I had opp scene, moved to a christian school for last 2 yr of schooling.. and they name sake prayers always made complete sense. :)
